WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Congressman John Boccieri (D-Alliance) today introduced legislation to standardize duty refunds for American manufacturers. Boccieri introduced legislation, H.R. 3988, that allows America's companies the ability to claim refunds on tariffs paid on items that are then exported by a domestic manufacturer, a system known as duty drawback.
Boccieri's legislation specifically increases the number of items considered for refunds by standardizing the definition of qualifying items. "This technical expansion on the products available for duty drawback reduces costs for American manufacturers and makes them more competitive in the global marketplace," said Boccieri. "This bill is good for our nation's companies and I appreciate the Timken Company bringing this issue to my attention. By increasing the potential to boost U.S. exports, we in turn are protecting American jobs." The Timken Company approached Congressman Boccieri earlier this year explaining that duty drawback is currently applied unequally to our domestic industries, including steel. Boccieri's bill expands the exemption for items under the 8-digit Harmonized Tariff Schedule code to include all U.S. industries, including steel, rather than just those already exempted.
